The Mobile Origin OT1 is a two-part magnetic holder that attaches your phone to the metal part of a gym machine, a squat rack, a golf trolley or a motorbike. The bottom base attaches magnetically to ferromagnetic metal, the front head holds the phone, and between them sits a ball joint with a 360° rotating head. It needs no clamp, suction cup or screws to mount.

Dual magnetic system: base to metal, head to phone

The OT1 works with two separate magnetic joints, each with a different job. The bottom base attaches to the metal part of the equipment, the front head holds the phone. The holder therefore needs no clamp, suction cup or screws, which helps on round and square posts and frames where a clamp has nothing to sit on. Attaching and removing it takes a second, so you can move the holder to another machine between two sets.

N52 neodymium magnets and holding force

The head contains 20 N52-grade neodymium magnets, the highest commonly available grade of neodymium. According to the manufacturer the base holds with a force of up to 14 kg and the head with about 2.0 kg. The difference between the two forces is deliberate: the base is meant to stay on the machine even through vibrations, while the head has to hold the phone and at the same time release it when you take it off in one movement. The case affects the strength of the connection to the phone, because a thick or rugged case without magnets increases the distance between the magnets and weakens the bond.

Hands free during a workout

A phone mounted on the machine stays in your field of view, so you can follow a timer, a training plan or a video without putting it on the floor or on a bench. The display sits roughly at eye level and you do not have to look for the phone and unlock it again after every set. For filming your technique the holder is steadier than a phone propped against a bottle or a weight plate; line the head up so the shot covers the full range of motion. The most common mounting spots in the gym are the post of a machine, a squat rack or the frame of a cable pulley.

Which surfaces the holder attaches to

The base holds on ferromagnetic metal, that is on steel: on the posts and frames of gym machines, on a squat rack, on the metal parts of a golf trolley, on a motorbike tank or on a metal surface on a boat. It does not hold on aluminium, non-magnetic stainless steel, plastic or painted composite, because these materials do not attract a magnet. Checking takes a few seconds: put the base against the surface and you will know straight away whether it has gripped. The surface should be flat and clean, because unevenness and a thick layer of paint increase the gap between the magnet and the metal and reduce the holding force.

360° rotating head with a ball joint

Between the base and the head sits a ball joint, and the head rotates through 360°. That lets you line the phone up in portrait or landscape, tilt it to the camera angle or turn it towards you to check how you are performing an exercise. You manage the adjustment with one hand, without loosening a screw or a locking lever, so you can change the position even between reps. The joint holds the position you set, so the phone will not tip over on its own during a workout.

MagSafe directly, other phones via the metal ring

iPhones with MagSafe magnetic attachment from the 12 series onwards and cases with MagSafe magnets attach to the head directly, without any extra accessories. You mount Android phones and phones in an ordinary case using the self-adhesive metal ring from the package: stick it on the back of the phone or the case and the connection to the head then works the same way. The head has a diameter of 60 mm and the ring 55 mm, so you can stick the ring on a smaller phone as well without it overhanging the edges. The holder is purely mechanical and magnetic, so it holds and angles the phone but does not charge it.

Dimensions, weight and material

Assembled, the holder measures 54 x 60 x 68 mm and weighs 82 g, so it fits into the side pocket of a sports bag. The body is made of polycarbonate and glass-filled polyamide (PC and PA-GF), a combination that withstands mechanical load and is dimensionally stable, so the ball joint will not start to develop play over time. Compared with all-metal holders of a similar size the assembly is lighter, which you notice mainly when you carry it with you every day.
